Yes, you can know God!
"And you will
seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."
Jeremiah 29:13
Maybe you're saying, "What do you mean 'knowing God?' I mean, how can you know
Someone who is so great, who is so...way up there...if He's there at all?"
The fact that you found this website, that you clicked on this page, shows you're at least
looking for something, someone outside yourself. Can I prove God exists? No more than
anyone can prove He doesn't. All I can point to is the change He made in my life and
countless others who gave Him a try. Are you willing to do that? To just give Him a try?
You may feel you don't deserve to
know God. Join the crowd. In fact, that's a good sign you're on your way to knowing God.
In Romans 3:23 it says, "For all have sinned..." We're all in the same boat when
it comes to sin.
To know God you must start from
where you are. That's the only place you and I have to start from. It's nice to try and
clean up your life, but it doesn't help in knowing Him. There's no need to start
better.
Since we've all sinned, we can only start
now.
To know God, you will have to
look in a different direction. Notice I didn't say, "improve your life." We've
already seen that's unnecessary. Just look in a different direction, be willing to travel
a different road. The Bible calls it "repentance." It's simply acknowledging
that the road you've traveled thus far has not worked and you need something else,
Someone else to fill that awful, yawning emptiness deep down inside. Ever notice that
emptiness? It's real isn't it?
When you've turned around and
begin looking toward God, you'll notice a Person named Jesus. Who is this Jesus? He is God
in the flesh. He came to earth 2000 years ago for one purpose, to die on the cross. He
didn't die because He did something wrong. He died because WE did wrong. He died for our
wrongs, our sins, for you and me.
You want to know God? You've got
to meet Jesus. He said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes
to the Father, but through Me" (John 14:6 NASB).
And where is Jesus?
He gives us the answer: "Behold,
I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in
to him, and will dine with him, and he with Me" (Revelation 3:20 NASB).
Have you ever seen a print of
that old painting of Jesus wearing a white robe and standing outside a door and knocking?
You'll notice the door has no doorknob on the outside. It must be opened on the
inside...by you and me.
Jesus is standing outside the
door of your heart right now...knocking. All you have to do is open it.
To open the door means you will
stop trusting yourself to somehow work your way to God and you will, instead, begin to
trust Jesus - that He has paved the way to God with His suffering and death on the cross.
Ready to meet God. Here's a
prayer that will help. Pray it aloud, if you wish, or silently, but pray it from your
heart:
"Jesus, I know that I have
sinned and committed many wrongs in my life. I have an emptiness deep inside I can't fill,
although I've tried. I need You. I want to know You, Jesus. I believe You died on the
cross for my sins. I ask You to be my Lord and Savior. I need you and I want to know you.
I place my trust in You today, help me to live for You from this moment on. I pray this in
Your name, Jesus. Amen."
If you prayed that prayer and
meant it, you are a child of God. You have just became acquainted with God. No, you
probably don't see Him or hear Him, maybe you don't even feel Him, yet. That's OK. The
more you read the Bible and pray, the closer you'll get to Him. He can become more real
than the people you see every day.
Please do these things: (1) read
the Bible, start with the book of John (it's often called the Gospel of John just after
the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament), (2) pray every day and (3) tell someone what you
just did, that you just asked Jesus into your heart, (4) find other Christians to
fellowship with, and (5) find a Christian Church to worship in. (It's important to find
one where the pastor and people love the Lord and believe the Bible.)
If you have any questions at all,
please feel free to contact
Pastor Steve. God
bless you!
